What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The body possesses a unique internal intelligence and wisdom that continually strives to maintain a state of health within the body. This innate intelligence works to maintain normal heart rate, blood pressure and adrenaline production; this same intelligence directs our bodily function to continuously adapt to an ever-changing environment.
Chiropractic involves the study of philosophy, science and art. Philosophy considers the fundamental nature of the existence of human beings and their interaction with the environment. The sciences deal with aspects of the universe related to human biology, and especially the relationship between spinal segments and the nerve system. Chiropractic's art is the expression of its philosophy and the concern with locating and correcting vertebral subluxations.
Instead of treating your symptoms, your Doctor of Chiropractic is primarily interested in detecting, reducing, and preventing the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

What is a Vertebral Subluxation Complex?
In simplest terms, a Vertebral Subluxation Complex is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of normal position and create pressure on the spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are between each of the bones in your spine and this pressure or irritation can cause the nerves to malfunction. As well, this pressure can interfere with the signals traveling along these nerves.
How does this affect me?
Your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. If you interfere with the signals traveling over nerves, parts of your body will not get the proper messages and will not function at 100% of their innate abilities. In other words, some parts of your body will not be working properly. It is the responsibility of the Doctor of Chiropractic to locate subluxations and to correct them. This is done through a series of chiropractic adjustments specifically designed to correct the vertebral subluxation in your spine.

Should You Be Seeing a Doctor of Chiropractic?
Headaches, back pain, numbness, tingling, and other health problems can often be traced to the spine. Many things can cause the moving bones of the spine to lose their normal motion or position. This can irritate or choke the sensitive nerve roots that branch off the spinal cord to service the organs and tissues of your body. Many spinal problems result in the appearance of unequal leg lengths.
